Policy

The Board of Trustees of Grasslands Division (the "Board") recognizes its mandate to provide quality education services to students enrolled in schools and programs operated by the Board within a fiscally responsible framework. The Board also recognizes that a variety of factors may necessitate the reduction of professional staff in a particular school, or in the school division as a whole.

GUIDELINES

The Board delegates to the superintendent overall responsibility for the implementation of the staff reduction process; including making the initial decision as to whether professional staff reduction is required and implementing all required procedures.

PROCEDURES

  1. Where the superintendent has recommended the termination of one or more continuing contracts due to the need to reduce staff, the teacher(s) shall be given notification as outlined in Administrative Procedure 712, Section 10 under Procedures.

  2. The Board shall meet to determine whether or not to terminate the contract(s) as recommended. The teacher shall be invited to attend with ATA or legal counsel, if so desired by the teacher.

  3. Any notice of termination shall be given in accordance with the requirements of the School Act and subsequently the Education Act.

  4. Nothing in this policy is to be construed as limiting the options of the Board to dismiss or release teachers for cause or as otherwise permitted by law.
